Just call me J.J. 

My legal name is Jessica Jane Stepleton Stern. Still, my family and friends have always called me J.J.

 

I was born into poverty in St. Marys, Ohio, and then moved to Ft. Myers, Florida. My family and friends always knew me as J.J. I worked hard to reinvent myself in my younger years and became Jessica J. Stepleton, a real estate professional and community organizer in Destin, Florida. Then, at 38, something unexpected happened—I fell in love, got married, moved to Arlington, Virginia, and became Mrs. Jeffrey Stern, also known as Jessica Jane Stern. Not long after, I became a mother and authored my first children's book under that very sophisticated name.

 

Having experienced foster care and family separation, I’ve always felt a deep concern for humanity. This led me to co-found Connect Our Kids, the first to use smart technology to help find families for children in foster care (think Ancestry.com meets Facebook)—a passion project that was a true labor of love. Under that same name, I also created and produced the YouTube series All Connected: A Place for Belonging, a free mental well-being platform for children and families. I truly believe I was born to create this resource designed to create connection for those who need it the most.

Now, I’m returning to my roots as I pursue my childhood dream of being a writer. In just a few weeks, I’ll be debuting my first fiction novel under my childhood nickname, J.J. Stepleton. It's the long-awaited resolution to my identity crisis.

Make no mistake, I’m still the same person—an honest advocate, a fiercely loyal friend, a loving wife, and an adoring mother. But I'm really just another woman, striving to be the change I wish to see in the world. No more, no less.
